The Ottawa Outlaws were the final AUDL team to start their 2017 season and the extra few weeks of practice were a major reason that they went 1-1 on what is always a brutal road trip to DC and Philadelphia.
After a 14 hour bus marathon saw the team arrive in DC at 4:45 am, the Outlaws took to the field versus the DC Breeze and despite falling behind early battled to stay in the game against a DC team that is off to a solid start this season. This was the first chance for a number of rookies and the European imports to get a feel for the pro game on the big AUDL field. After dropping a 29-24 decision against the Breeze it was on to Philadelphia for a Sunday match up against the Phoenix.
Gone are the days when a game in Philly meant you could just show up and grab the 2 points. The Phoenix have boosted their roster significantly and will challenge everyone in the East division year. For 3 quarters, the team traded shots until a few timely errors and great defensive plays resulted in a late surge by the Outlaws. In the end, the Outlaws were able to walk away with a 29-26 well earned victory on a weekend when fatigue, fast food, bumps and bruises make Sunday games very difficult.
The Outlaws now turn their attention to their Home Opener on May 6 v the Toronto RUSH who have stumbled a bit out of the gate. The game will debut their new home venue at Millennium Park Stadium. Game time is 4 pm and ticket are available at otttawaoutlaws.com
